Battery Replacement

MacBook Battery Replacement

The general rule is MacBooks are typically good for 10 years. However, MacBook batteries are only good for a few years and will require a replacement at some point. Fortunately, replacing your MacBook battery is far less expensive then replacing your MacBook. According to Apple’s website, “Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles.” After the design capacity of your MacBook has reached 80% or lower, your MacBook will notify you “Service Recommended” under the battery icon in the status bar. If your MacBook is a 2021 model or newer, you can check your battery capacity under the battery section in “System Settings.” If your MacBook is a 2020 model or older, you can download a trusted 3rd party program called Coconut Battery to check your battery health.

My MacBook is getting hot. Is this due to the battery?

Yes. As a battery approaches is life expectancy, the lithium-ion cells will begin to produce more heat, and sometimes expended, which will lead to your MacBook to become hotter than normal. Replacing the battery, as well as dusting and replacing the CPU thermal paste will significantly lower your MacBook’s operating temperature.

My MacBook is not powering on at all. Is my battery bad?

While an old battery can prevent your MacBook from powering on, most of the time there is another issue preventing a MacBook from powering on. The easiest thing to check is the charger or charging cable. Make sure the cable and charger  you are using is are Apple original and has no kinks or damage in the cable. Aftermarket chargers do not play well with MacBooks and can cause logic board damage. Sometimes a burnt out charge port or even a short on the main logic board can prevent a MacBook from powering on. In any instance when a MacBook is not powering on at all, we will perform a free diagnostic (with the exclusion of liquid damage) to determine what your MacBook will need to power back on.
